The full name of the Monastery is the Light Everlasting Huazang Monastery. In legend, it is said that Pugong Monastery of the Eastern Han Dynasty originally built it as Puguang Hall or the Zudian Hall. Between the Tang and Song dynasties both Puguang and Guangxiang halls had a shared name called Guangxiang Monastery, which was considered as one of the six largest monasteries on Mt.Emei. At the beginning of Ming Dynasty,Bao Tan, the national Buddhist master refurbished the hall ,and its roof  was covered with iron tiles. It became known as the Iron_tile Hall. During Wanli period of Ming Dynasty a copper hall was constructed behind the Iron_tile Hall.

The copper hall had a douoble_eaves roof, an engreved ridge, and delicately latticed tiny windows. Inside the hall sat Puxian in the center, surrounded by thousands of other Buddha figures. Right outside each corner of the hall was a copper pagoda, alloyed all with gold. Therefore, the pagodas shone so gloriously on the top of the mountain that the name of “golden summit”had circulted among the opeople. Zhu Yijun, one of the Ming emperors named the hall as the Light Everlasting Huazang Monastery. In 1854, Puxian on the elephant statue ws placed in the hall for worship. It was copper cast and presented by Dailai Lama from Tibet. However, disastrous fires destroyed Huazang Monastery several times. Reconstruction of the current monastery began in 1986.  In 1990, it was completed and opened to the public.

Standing side by the side with Huazang Monastery, Woyun Nunnery was built during the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty and is located on the Viewing Terrace at 3,054m above sea level. It is also side “the Silvery Summit” because of the tin_tiled roof of the  nunnery. In the Jade Buddha Hall of the nunnery there is a jade Buddha statue, presented by a Buddhist visting delegation from Burma. Behind the nunnery is a small vieweing platform. The first and final apperances of the Buddhist Halo are seen here,on this platform. Therefore, the  platform is considered as the ideal place wekk to the east of the nunnery. The well is able to supply over a thousand people with water. The Cliff of Self_Sacrifice, the Viewing Terrance and others are the ideal places on the Golden summit from which view the four wonders:the Sunrise, the Buddhist Halo, the Sacred Lamp and the Sea Clouds.

You are able to see the sun rise over the summit in every year about 200 days .Most sun rise days occur in summer and autumn. The Buddhist Halo is bestowed with the most legendary flavor, compared with the other three wonders. The circle of Buddhism believes that the Buddhist Halo is “Baohao Image”, one of the 32 images that the Buddha has. You can view the halo in any season, but it occurs on about 80 days throughout the year. The Sarced Lamp is also called the Buddhist Lamp. Generally,it is called the “Innumerable Bright Lamps Toward Puxian”. There are four natural conditions that enable the Sacred Lamp to appear. It happens at midnight after the rain has just stopped ; when there is no moon in the sky; when there are no clouds below the peaks; and when there is no breeze on the mountaintop. Compared with the halo,it is even less probable to view the Sacred Lamp. The Sea of the Clouds is most likely to appear in summer and autumn on Mt.Emei. As it appears, clouds often remain around the mid_mountain area. The peaks, being higher than the clouds, appear to gallop over the sea of clouds.Buddhist describe the phenomenon as “the graceful guidance of all sentient beings.”
